Our 2026 Walking Festival weekend features short, medium and long walks in and around our lovely Montgomery town and local countryside. Walks range from a 2 miles, easy stroll on our Montgomery Heritage Walk – taking in our towns landmark buildings, locations and our castle with panoramic views out across our civil war battleground fields – to longer, more challenging, 21 and 10 mile walks for the hardened walkers amongst you.
All the walks at the Festival are guided, and are FREE (except for bus fares for those walks that use a service bus to reach the starting point). However, spaces are limited, so please reserve your places via the link below each walk.
PLEASE NOTE: Unfortunately.. Dogs cannot accompany walkers on our walks as paths cross farmers fields with roaming, grazing sheep, cattle and livestock.
SATURDAY 3rd OCTOBER — WALKS
CHALLENGE WALK
21 miles – Strenuous going
Start 07:30 at Maldwyn Way car park
As usual this is a challenge walk due to the distance and hilly terrain encountered, but with no scrambling involved. It is a different route to any previous challenge walks at the Festival and has some stupendous views. From Montgomery we follow Offa’s Dyke Path up onto the Kerry Ridgeway and then circle round the hills and vales to enjoy very varied landscapes en-route back to Montgomery.
Start 10:15 at Maldwyn Way car park. Service bus to Churchstoke.
Walk up through beautiful hilly countryside as you leave Churchstoke. Superb views of Roundton and Corndon Hills but we don’t exhaust ourselves having to climb them! Return to Montgomery via an Ice Age meltwater deep valley and the rural lanes, paths and parkland of Montgomery Vale.
Start 09:45 at Maldwyn Way car park. Service bus to Wotherton.
Superb walking in the rolling hills of the Rorrington area. The area is not well known so unlikely to meet any other people! Return to Montgomery along Marrington Dingle and the Vale of Montgomery with views of Montgomery and its castle.
Montgomery Town Hill and the beautiful Rolling Marches countryside
5.5 miles – Moderate
Start 10:30 at Maldwyn Way car park.
Enjoy the 360 degree views of Wales and Shropshire from the top of Town Hill followed by an exploration of the beautiful adjacent countryside which is best summed up by the term Rolling Marches.
Montgomery Town Hall — 8pm Sat 3rd Oct. — £10 (Includes light refreshments.)
Our Land seamlessly juxtaposes the two sides of the debate around our access to nature, giving voice to the different perspectives: those fighting for greater access to the countryside and the landowners who claim to be stewards of the land. Blending history with an eye on the future, Our Land charts the conflict, exploring the complex issues of access, custodianship and conservation. Articulately presenting arguments from both sides, the film challenges age-old beliefs around property that have shaped our relationship with the land for over a thousand years. And as the battle for nature continues the film asks the vital question, who truly has the right to roam?
Yes, we always have a walk around the Cefn-y-Coed Hills west of Montgomery and it always fills up quickly! This year there are some ‘out of the way’ paths added to the traditional favourite route so do give it a go again or try for the first time!
Paths have been opened up north of Abermule that give wonderful views and a variety of countryside. The walk returns to Montgomery through the Vale of the Severn and includes a stretch along the beautiful Montgomery canal
Walk next to parts of Offa’s Dyke soon after leaving Montgomery, enjoying the rural delights of the Vale of Montgomery. Although the walk is almost completely flat the views of the surrounding hills are lovely.
Undertake the Montgomery Heritage Walk with a very knowledgeable Montgomery guide so that you can fully appreciate the incredible history of our glorious town, historic buildings, civil war battlefields and more…
